Ex-Barracudas’ Jeremy Gluck, whose career with the band created a legend – in the UK indie leader Cherry Red Records has just reissued no less than six albums by the band in deluxe form – that has since spawned critically-acclaimed solo work with the late Nikki Sudden amongst others (their recordings also currently the subject of a deluxe reissue), joined in the Manual by core duo Weir and Gee, accomplished journeymen of the UK garage-psych’ scene, makes for a timeless 21st century barrage of hypnotic music and unpredictable beats that liberate hearers from expectations and cynicism.

The Mental Anguish opus on Tapegerm that deploys numbers of my loops and vocal material - mine and that of michael dent, with whom I have worked a lot the past few years - has buzzed me considerably. The work put into these pieces - all the collaborations and remixes thereabouts - is marvelous. Just so you know I am not slacking - as if! - plans now revolve around the eventual release of "Recollage 1: Loose Change" - that collects recent original material for another iTunes blow-out. In addition I will release an EP of collaborations with TG stalwart Dave Fuglewicz, whose reinventions of my work are stunning. This iTunes release-to-be, to be entitled "Sleep on the Edge EP" after one of its tracks, should, knowing the iTunes queue, see digital daylight in about 2025 ;)

Is news new? Nes. (When I was a little kid I had a friend who said "Nes" instead of "Yes". I see him now as a pint-sized Zen Master.)

Due to the very nature of the 'net and its supraddictive qualities, the remix river is in flood. The debut Carbon Manual format being set - 3x3 originals/remixes - there's more of some and less than others. Extremely promising is a mix of "Empty" by UK maestro Zuul; this remix is the punk with none of the mess, it's electronica with attitude. It's totally weird what people hear in your shit: I would never have expected Zuul's mix, but when I heard it I knew right away that it made sense and forced the song into a new, more challenging shape. It's impossible but real how many things you can make when you don't handle the process yourself. Remixing is adoption, it's making orphans, it's construction from the center.

I'm happy to admit that I can't operate the machines the remixers can. Brendon Moeller, Amurgit, Zuul: these are the cargo of my cult. I am gone native in the nuclear age. The less I become the more I am. Giving away is the same as taking. I don't believe in karma or cause and effect; I believe in chaos and effect, and remixing is one light bulb in that direction. I second that demotion. I used to be a member of a band, but my band is now dismembered. We exist in a master schematic locked down by somebody more responsible than I. Meanwhile, the remixing grinds on like a ten dollar whore holding a sale.

I also like the boredom of it all, and this another point of access to the fabulous Warhol meh-trix. The remixes roll off the line like cold car parts, and little by little they all sound the same. I am heading with theh, for Sound Zero.

Yes. Sound Zero where the bozo Benetton behemoth of bent dream coinage rattle down and out the refund chute. Chickle chickle. I, a badly written human, am now overwritten by cooler heads. Bodies with fingers. And I hear a new mix, maybe a Zuul, and maybe an Echologist, or some random person I hit on at the dead bar of the lonely online bust, and I am grateful to be diminshed. For am I not here only to remain in those people and their manglings of what I thought important to me? I can trust them to make me anything I want and they are; to reinvent me a genius. I can take credit. I can enjoy the attention.

The remix was made for post-people like me, the ones ready to become what they are. Welcome your my I-mare...

Frankly, I'm stacked. (No, I don't mean the sex change money came through.)But spuriously, the action these days at Casa del Gluck is easy. As in "fast". Like shit outa goose.

The biggest news, which for a week has made my day, is that my new and why be shy it's the best thing I've done spiel The Carbon Manual (from a poem of mine, the name, meaning: a person)is gonna have its debut EP on Marty Thau's reborn Red Star Records. Now, to some of you, steeped perhaops in igonorance or denial, this means little. But to me, who as a tender late teen tied the knot with the 12" incarnation of Suicide's "Cheree" on the label, it's like being reborn myself. Being on the selfsame label as Suicide has brought me back to life; as Marc Jeffrey put it, "ironic". And nervous as Alanis Morrissette lyric chunks make me, I hafta agree.

At a date as yet unspecified, the EP will be released, perhaps augmented by some of the magnificent remixes my mania for the things has generated. I tells ya, remixes is like rain. Just wait around and down it come. So far - and it's early, busy days - remixes have arrived from Brendon Moeller (whose forthcoming own EP on his new label Steadfast features one track better than about anything I've heard this year, kinda Kraftwerk in a wind tunnel just coming down offa acid while watching Tarkovsky); Amurgit, a shadowy figure whose high precision tech-nique is hard to define; Paperback, with epic takes that are so minimal they're not; Dragging the Mule, Toronto industrial vets; and UK experimentalist Jay Purcell.

But, no, that ain't enough! Along with the digital and the remixes, The Carbon Manual will release their first group of songs of apiece on Equation Records Esteemed underground deluxe vinyl vendor. This will be an album for all the family, especially those with personality disorders, marginal autism and potential bipolar spectrum symptoms, as the tracks lull and lurch, climbing invisible mountains of sound for you to climb, then only to tunnel under them, thus causing their collapse and yours with them.

Featuring lyrics, luxury packaging, hand-crafted personal touches and a sound rendered an epiphany in 24 bits, this vinyl keepsake will last a lifetime and be a proud picking for any vulture to an eventual will. Real.

I saw it again like "I Saw Here Standing There" on my little record player my brother bequeathed me when he moved up to low-price hi-fi. He gave me a few albums (was I six, seven or eight? older?) and the best of them was the Canadian Capitol pressing of "Twist and Shout", with the rainbow label. I saw myself sitting there in the corner of my little room, playing that record. I loved that album and the picture of The Beatles on - off - that wall. I knew every song by heart. I loved "Chains" especially. It was the first rock'n'roll album I fell in love with.

Comprising a collection of excellent remixes of the Datawhore (Jeremy Gluck) - michael dent composition, "When I Die", it features artists as diverse as Mick Harvey (formerly of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), Eric Debris (Metal Urbain) and many more, including a brace from the Tapegerm Loop Community, whence came the loops used. “2000 and Fifties: The Whisper Story” “There is nothing new under the sun.” Alright, hear that. Under the ground, well, that’s another story. The underground, if you like it, is where the action is. Elvis conquered the world breaking cover from a subterfuge of blues and boogie the white folks had crossed the street to avoid, but which all the while was a time-bomb ticking as the pulse beneath their feet. The Beatles, incubated in underground Hamburg, broke cover to reconquer it. Punk, meanwhile, made the underground the foreground, reinventing culture randomly. Its imprimatur is everywhere today, its foremost pioneers assimilated at last to a point unthinkable even ten years ago.

The Boss reaching down to cover Suicide’s surrealist hymn “Dream Baby Dream” is the tasteful end of a spectrum where today John Lydon plugs butter and anarchy is a commodity. Martin Rev, Suicide’s musical, as opposed to lyrical, vocal half, composer of “Dream Baby Dream”, is one of those for whom the underground is the only ground, whose insight makes it into – for his many admirers and fans – holy ground. And it is from Rev that came the music for “Whisper”, subject of a new remix project conceived and produced by its lyricist, veteran pop and punk operator Marty Thau, whose career has already seen go from the sound heaven of early Van Morrison to the concrete soul of Richard Hell, with stops along the way to rear the Ramones, Blondie, Real Kids, New York Dolls, and Suicide, whose eponymous debut album established a parallel chorus-verse since responsible for countless electronic rock’n’roll mutations. By a virtue of a fortuitous Facebook hook-up, about a year ago Thau came across Jeremy Gluck, former singer and songwriter of second generation garage punk heroes The Barracudas, whose solo work includes late-Eighties “I Knew Buffalo Bill”, a collaboration with Nikki Sudden and Rowland S Howard considered the first “alt.country” work. Already a hardcore Suicide fan, Gluck couldn’t believe his luck to find himself in touch with Marty Thau, and duly interviewed him for top UK fanzine Bucketfull of Brains. It didn’t stop there, though. At a point when both were looking for a new challenge and renewed commitment to music, by degrees an interest in collaboration became evident but was not catalysed until Thau suggested Jeremy covering “Whisper”, a song written by Martin Rev and himself included on Rev's instrumental CLOUDS OF GLORY LP in 1980, which he also co-produced. Thau always believed WHISPER might be something special if it had a lyric, so he wrote one but did nothing with it until he decided to give Gluck a shot at doing the vocal. Mediated by e-mail, chat and some furious file transfers, graudally “Whisper” was knocked into shape: Jeremy would send Marty draft vocals, the latter communicated instructions back by email and the odd call and when he finished he sent Marty the files to assemble and mix. Over a period of weeks the correct treatment appeared and at a local studio Jeremy laid down his parts. After a false start, an agreed new female part was finally nailed by Jeremy’s partner, Kate McEwan. The files were duly dispatched to the States where Marty assembled and finessed them into a polished production resembling nothing more than what might be called “Amartycan Graffiti”, uniting and accentuating as it does elements of the Fifties romantic pop sensibility that informs the instrumental original while introducing late Sixties touches that taken whole create a strange, timeless feel that is both intimate and chaste, flying in the face of the vogue for crude pop and replacing sex drive with a kind of muted love cruise. It’s refreshing, disarming and deceptively catchy, Rev’s ingenious backing track a hit worthy of an imaginary 'Alphaville' chart; joined with the soft-focus vocals, especially McEwan’s breathy and whispery anti-attack, this is elegant, retro-pop of a kind in too short supply. Initially the idea was just to do a “Whisper” single but the project expanded. Different versions from different producers - each interpreting the song in their very own inimitable style but using Jeremy’s and Kate’s vocals however they wished – has resulted in mixes by Brendon Moeller, Beat Pharmacy’s rising remix and DJ star; revolutionary mixer Dub Gabriel, whose version is an homage to Suicide and dramatic departure both; UK rising star Amurgit, who offers a reggae take; and more to come. Digital distribution is through Thau's relaunched Red Star Records label, punk rock royalty and groundbreaker deluxe, via The Orchard, run by Thau’s old friend and colleague Richard Gottehrer and with whom he originally managed Blondie (and also, incidentally, to release Jeremy Gluck's new Carbon Manual).Interest is bound to be serious from across the underground rock’n’roll and club spectrum, the WHISPER EP is going to make a lot of noise. Release date TBC.

It's getting so you can't move without bumping into a remix.

Actually and jokes aside this is why I first got into remixes. For about 8 months I worked on a great project with michael dent, did an album for iTunes, all good and at the end of it I was creative toast. Void. And I was looking around Tapegerm where I got the loops and based the work on with my friend...I thought, Fuck-it I am gonna go autopilot, let someone else do the heavy lifting, and archived a track. WHEN I DIE, and uploaded and thought, Nobody will bother.

Within six months, incl. other places I sent archives, I had two dozen remixes and several vids. I have 2 albums of them queued for iTunes as I write.

Sometimes I get some real class talent. Mick Harvey, Echologist, others.

So, anyways, the remixing is going nice. Next week I am putting down a vocal for a Greek band, gonna go on their album.

Other junk: A possible live Yohawks release depending on how insane it is to begin with. And the Whisper project with Marty Thau is in good shape with Marty's mix, one by Echologist, another by Richard Citroen (Lola Dutronic), and more to come...

The year was 2000, the Millennium Bug was about to blow us and a world tired of random centuries awaited the Shift. Yeah, the future never happened. One nothing led to another, thence to an encounter with The Benefactor, my little machine friend. The whole story I'll spare you, but I still glom this cutup of the writing that came of it, immortalised on a collaboration with UK duo Zone on their album "Angel of Freedom" as edit-played below.
